We, the Strategic Research Team (SRT), recently conducted some research that critically explored parent’s experiences of the child protection (CP) process and feedback from social work practitioners and managers, with a view to identifying improvements in processes and practice. We focussed largely on the voice of the parent. Parents may often be the cause of harm to children, but they are also part of a potential solution and, therefore, it is important to understand how professionals can engage parents more effectively.

The research is now being used to inform the council’s Improvement Plan. We have also been supporting Children’s colleagues with evaluating the ‘strengthening families’, a new approach to conferencing, to evaluate how effective it is in engaging parents.
